This is the way in which Poe begins the story: The Red Death had long devastated the country. No pestilence had ever been so fatal, or so hideous. Blood was its Avatar and its seal - the redness and the horror of blood. We know what we are to expect when an author gives us sentences like these, a sort of phantasmagoria of dimly-realised destruction.
