Published in 1937, Wells had a vision of the world slipping into insanity. This short and well written book describes the insanity as a fog of evil and terror arising from race memory harking back to prehistoric times. Shall we fight this evil? Or shall we go on our merry way? The ambiguous ending offers the reader both and neither -- with just the slightest hint that perhaps the only sane thing to do is acknowledge evil and then quietly walk away. With the Spanish civil war in full swing and WWII just a couple of years off, readers have to wonder: what was H. G. Wells thinking?
