Mrs. Plansky's Revenge is bestselling author Spencer Quinn's first novel in a new series since the meteoric launch of Chet and Bernie--introducing the irresistible and unforgettable Mrs. Plansky, in a story perfect for book clubs and commercial fiction readers. Mrs. Loretta Plansky, a recent widow in her seventies, is settling into retirement in Florida while dealing with her 98-year-old father and fielding requests for money from her beloved children and grandchildren. Thankfully, her new hip hasn't changed her killer tennis game one bit. One night Mrs. Plansky is startled awake by a phone call from a voice claiming to be her grandson Will, who desperately needs ten thousand dollars to get out of a jam. Of course, Loretta obliges--after all, what are grandmothers for, even grandmothers who still haven't gotten a simple "thank you" for a gift sent weeks ago. Not that she's counting. By morning, Mrs. Plansky has lost everything. Law enforcement announces that Loretta's life savings have vanished, and that it's hopeless to find the scammers behind the heist. First humiliated, then furious, Loretta Plansky refuses to be just another victim. In a courageous bid for justice, Mrs. Plansky follows her only clue on a whirlwind adventure to a small village in Romania to get her money and her dignity back--and perhaps find a new lease on life, too.

Mrs. Planskys Revenge by Spencer Quinn has an interesting premise, but it did not live up to it. The author is an overly descriptive writer. The long, drawn-out descriptions are not needed. We learn way too much about Mrs. Planskys deceased husband, Norm (including a tale about a tree cutting that he planted and all the work it entailed). It appears that Mrs. Plansky is a little out of it in the beginning (zoning out frequently and forgetting things). Later, though, she comes up with a plan to get herself to Romania and find a way to retrieve her money. The setting up of the characters and plot takes up the first third of the book. I had trouble liking any of the characters. Mrs. Plansky enables her children. They only visit or call when they need money. I did not understand how she could give them money for their cockamamie ventures (it is like Mrs. Plansky is throwing her money away). Mrs. Plansky needed to learn to say no or make those ungrateful kids sign loan agreements. The story is told from Mrs. Plansky and Dinu, a budding criminal, point of view (it is sad when you start liking the criminal more than the protagonist). Mrs. Plansky refers to herself in the third person throughout the whole book. It is odd. I found the internal dialogue to be awkward and dreary. The story moves at a slow pace (actually, snails move faster) until near the end. The ending is swift and farfetched. I believe some things are supposed to be humorous, but I did not feel like laughing. I was just grateful to turn the last page. The story does contain mild foul language, intimate relations, swindling people of money, physical abuse, and alcohol consumption. Mrs. Planskys Revenge is a monotonous tale with a wealthy widow, avaricious kids, a currency scam, a difficult father, a magnetic writer, cybercrime criminals, and a farfetched finale.

a cozy mystery
Mrs. Plansky receives a call from a person stating he's her grandson in the middle of the night requesting $10,000 to help him out of a situation. Of course, she helps as that's what grandmothers do. In the morning, she finds that her life savings is gone. She's been scammed and law enforcement says finding the perpetrators is hopeless. That doesn't stop Mrs. Plansky from embarking on an adventure to Romania to find her money.
MRS. PLANSKY'S REVENGE was a fun cozy mystery. I loved that the main character was in her seventies. It seems like most of the books I pick up have middle-age or younger characters so to be reading about an older main character was refreshing. Mrs. Plansky is surely spunky. I enjoyed following her on her journey to Romania and was cheering for her the entire time. I also liked Dinu even though he did some unlikable things. The pacing was quick and I would have been happy to read this in one sitting if I hadn't had some things interrupting my time that forced me to put the book down. The writing was done well, bringing the setting and characters to life. I was sucked into the story right from the beginning. I laughed quite a few times but also felt sad at points since scams like this happen in real life. The ending of the book was satisfying.
I loved MRS. PLANSKY'S REVENGE and would highly recommend it to fans of cozy mysteries. This is the first book I've read by the author. I will definitely be looking into his other works.
Thank you to Forge for the gifted ARC.

cozy
Spencer Quinn is the author of many books, but this is the first I have read from them. This is a cozy mystery book with some crime, adventure and a bit of thrill. Our main character is Mrs. Loretta Plansky, a 70 something year old women who lives in Florida. She is a widow, but her father and grandchildren are still alive. One of them, Will, seemingly calls her asking for a lot of money. However this turns out to be a scam and she loses everything. On the journey to fight back against this scam she finds new meanings for life. I really liked the plot line of this because I've heard horror stories of this, it's something that actually happens and isn't all that rare. But though it's a real life scary topic, it's an enjoyable read. I enjoyed being on the journey with Mrs. Plansky. If you like cozy mysteries I would recommend, I will be looking to read more
