She arrived with her arts, her wits, and her only friend. In victory, her world has turned to ash. After rocking the cosmos with her deathly debut, Tamsyn Muir continues the story of the penumbral Ninth House in Harrow the Ninth, a mind-twisting puzzle box of mystery, murder, magic, and mayhem. Nothing is as it seems in the halls of the Emperor, and the fate of the galaxy rests on one woman's shoulders. Harrowhark Nonagesimus, last necromancer of the Ninth House, has been drafted by her Emperor to fight an unwinnable war. Side-by-side with a detested rival, Harrow must perfect her skills and become an angel of undeath -- but her health is failing, her sword makes her nauseous, and even her mind is threatening to betray her. Sealed in the gothic gloom of the Emperor's Mithraeum with three unfriendly teachers, hunted by the mad ghost of a murdered planet, Harrow must confront two unwelcome questions: is somebody trying to kill her? And if they succeeded, would the universe be better off? THE LOCKED TOMB TRILOGY BOOK 1: Gideon the Ninth BOOK 2: Harrow the Ninth BOOK 3: Alecto the Ninth

Whereas Gideon the Ninth was a seemingly extremely straightforward science fantasy mystery novel, Harrow the Ninth turns everything you thought about the storyline on its head, shakes you to bits, and flips it back around in the best way possible. It's convoluted and will have you consistently wondering about what's going on, frustrated at times even. With regular breadcrumbs given to you throughout the novel that start to connect so well into the first novel, some you may not have even noticed till reading into this one. The whole time it was wracking my brain and I found myself loving it so much. Here is one of those novels, that when everything does come together, the satisfaction of it is just fantastic. It wasn't really at all what I was expecting, and I do feel like I need a reread of both at some point to get a different perspective on what all happened. I do 100% suggest starting with Gideon the Ninth, but I 100% recommend both after reading this novel in particular.
