The novel begins with John Andrews, a naive and idealistic young man who enlists in the army to fight for his country. He soon realizes the harsh reality of war and becomes disillusioned with the military and the government. Dan Fuselli is a street-smart Italian-American who joins the army to escape poverty and discrimination. He becomes a sergeant and uses his position to gain power and control over his fellow soldiers. Chrisfield is a wealthy Harvard graduate who becomes an officer and struggles with the moral implications of war.The novel explores themes of disillusionment, class conflict, and the dehumanizing effects of war. Dos Passos uses a unique narrative style, incorporating newspaper headlines, song lyrics, and stream-of-consciousness writing to convey the chaos and confusion of war. Three Soldiers is considered a classic of American literature and a groundbreaking work of modernist fiction. It is a powerful and thought-provoking novel that offers a vivid portrayal of the human cost of war.""Anybody know where the electricity turns on?"" asked the sergeant in a good-humored voice. ""Here it is."" The light over the door of the barracks snapped on, revealing a rotund cheerful man with a little yellow mustache and an unlit cigarette dangling out of the corner of his mouth. Grouped about him, in overcoats and caps, the men of the company rested their packs against their knees. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations. Interesting and good read of an enlisted mans point of view of WWI. Reminds me a bit of "Good solider Svek" without the humor.

best novel i've read in a while
the prose is so efficient and clean. the characters are vivid, complex, natural. it's a difficult read in the sense that it is starkly real. this isn't the typical war novel as it's about people more than conflict--if that's possible. a must read for anyone that hopes to understand the experience of war, life, solitude, and isolation.
