I have already stated that I only intend to give such figures and statistics as may be easily understood. The following is a return of the admissions into the Liverpool Lock Hospital, for the sixteen years, 1860 to 1875, both inclusive: --The extraordinary and persistent preponderance of males over females will at once be apparent, being the reverse of what is, I believe, the rule elsewhere. The number of males would be far more, but for the limited accommodation. Had Since writing the above, I find that a similar preponderance exists in the Bristol Workhonse. we fifty instead of twenty-five beds on the men's side of the hospital, I feel sure that we could keep them fairly filled all the year round. On the other side, that allotted to females, I regret to say that we have seldom more than half the beds occupied. In the Liverpool Parish Infirmary, many cases of venereal disease are treated, and by the kindness of Dr. Alexander, the present visiting surgeon, I have been enabled to see the wards. I am indebted to Mr. Hagger, the vestry clerk, and Mr. Wilkie, the governor of the workhouse, for the following: --Liverpool Parish Infirmary. LOCK WAKDS. Return of Paupers admitted with Venereal Disease. With a few exceptions, the same preponderance of male over female patients is to be noticed, and this of itself would show these diseases to be very prevalent in this town, the more so as the greater proportion of the above are very severe cases, as we shall presently see.
