Volume 1 contains Nigel Witeker's two most important satirical works: his beast epic Speculum stultorum and his Contra curiales. Also included are John of Salisbury's Entheticus ad policraticum and John of Hauville's Architrenius, which describes the sorrowful journey of a fictitious mourner through the twelfth-century church, court and schools.
