Dunsany's Pegana was amongst the first residences of the mythopoeic spirit -- before that Ancient Genius travelled to Middle Earth, Earthsea & all of the myriad dreamscapes with which modern audiences are more familiar.
To this day Pegana remains ruefully forlorn, visited only by the erudite few. This is a tragedy, rendered all the more inexplicable by even the tersest perusal of the work. Dunsany's prose is resplendent in its poetic flair. It is generally more tender & less grandiloquent than Tolkien's, approaching the level of sensitivity of LeGuin's.
The stories' brevity allows for short escapades without requiring diligent study. The whole of Dunsany's saga is warmly recommended, not by this neophyte only, but also by the creators of its legacy.
