The history of the lighthouse an dconnected structures---the Anglesea Life Saving Station and the U.S. Coast Guard Life Boat Station #113--that helped protect 19th and early 20th century sailors in the southern New Jersey shore waters between Stone Harbor and North Wildwood that lead to the Intercoastal Waterway. Because there were more than 300 shipwrecks in the previous decade, a life saving station was constructed in 1849, and rebuilt in 1871. Construction began on the lighthouse in 1873 and completed in March, 1874. A new Life Saving Station was built in 1888 and both it and the lighthouse were under the control of the U.S. Treasury Department. By 1939, the Coast Guard was in of both after havinhg added a boathouse years earlier.
