The founder, John Robling, pioneered the use of wire rope in America in the 1840s, using it for canal aqueducts in western Pennsylvania. The most famous use of Roebling wire was in building the Brooklyn Bridge (completed in 1883); the company was also involved in constructing the Cincinnati Bridge (1867), the Williamsburg and Manhattan Bridges in New York (1903 and 1909), the George Washington Bridge (1932) and the Golden Gate (1937).
