"The Eastern Cherokee artists and craftsmen documented in this volume have made important contributions to a significant renascence of tribal arts and crafts production during the past 40 years, which has made their reservation, the Qualla Indian Boundary located in western North Carolina, one of the most vital contemporary Indian craft areas in the United States. Previous to this period of revitalization, Eastern Cherokee craftsmanship was a fading tradition. For instance, Frank G. Speck, a noted American scholar of eastern Indian cultures, observed in a study of Cherokee basketry and decoration published in 1920, that traditional rivercane basketry of the tribe was a rapidly dwindling craft, and that the doubleweave technique in particular 'is unfortunately abandoned among the Eastern Cherokee.'....."
