Smiles of a summer night
Volume one of "Pelle the Conquerer" is a series of vignettes covering Pelle's childhood experiences. He and his aged father are Norwegian immigrants/ guest workers in Denmark. As such they are 'second class' people, often mistreated.
I have headlined the review with the title of a Bergman film because despite some of the harsh incidents depicted, the text conveys a fine human sweetness.
