The lead character is a CATCHER IN THE RYE type troubled teen growing up in 1960's South Carolina. After she does an oral book report on Robert E. Lee for her Yankee history teacher, she falls deeply in love with the general. Her love leads her on a wild spiritual search that culminates at the Lee/Custis Mansion above Arlington National Cemetery. The story line moves chapter by chapter between the main character's search and dramatized events in Robert E. Lee's life (noted Lee historian, Emory Thomas, called this book, "the best portrait of Lee as a human being I have ever seen in American fiction.") I hardily agree.
