Long considered one of Arthur Schnitzler's greatest accomplishments, Professor Bernhardi brings together its author's treatment of anti-Semitism, an important social problem in Austria then and now, and his penetrating study of its title character. A difficult, complex hero in the mold of Ibsen's Thomas Stockman, Bernhardi is made to suffer from the reaction to his ethical, humane decision to ease a dying girl's suffering, by people whose principles are not always as high as his own. The Comedy of Words treats a favorite theme of Schnitzler's, the misuse of language, while Fink and Fliederbusch stands out as one of the few genuine and enduring comedies in German literature.

The Austrian censor wanted Arthur Schnitzler (1862-1931) to make changes to this play but no official clarification was given for this demand and Schnitzler made no changes. Consequently, the play was not performed in Austria until December 1918, after the fall of the Habsburg monarchy. However, it was staged in Berlin in 1912 in the presence of Schnitzler. Apparently the censor found the issues Schnitzler deals with far too provocative or dangerous.
The plot in a nutshell: Vienna, 1900 - Professor Bernhardi is a Jewish director of the clinic where a girl has undergone an abortion. She is going to die but does not know this and is in a state of euphoria. Bernhardi prevents a Catholic priest, from seeing her to adminster the last rites. He wishes to protect the girl; leave her in her euphoric state. However, Bernhardi's refusal to let the priest see her leads to the issue becoming an affair of state with the matter raised in parliament, and the press has a field day. Bernhardi's career is in the balance. What happens next is what this play is about.
Schnitzler brings to the fore several moral issues emanating from this affair: anti-Semitism, which was a problem in Austria at the time; political intrigue; corruption, hypocrisy, jealousy and rivalries in the medical profession. The censor obviously did not want such issues to be aired publicly in the theatre.
The play is classed as a 'comedy in five acts', but it is, of course, far more than that. This is Schnitzler at his best.
