This is a useful book to understand the context in which each generation in the US views the new immigrants. This case is about the Jewish immigration from Poland and Russia. It is a good exercise to transpose the arguments about the fears concerning the loss of identity to what is being said today about the Latin immigration to the US.
It was fun to note the author's concern about the "Natives" being suppressed, by which he did not mean the indigenous people of the Americas but the Anglo-saxon stock extended to include Catholics . A generation or two earlier, Catholics were also viewed as a threat to the identity of the US.
