Although I generally find Anthony Beevor to be a great author and historian, the use of acronyms in the beginning of the book make it difficult to follow.
The copy that I got had many notations, many obscene, from a previous owner. I did not see anything about notations in the sales description.

Invaluable but too dense
Beevor is a brilliant historian, capable of the most trenchant analysis. His book on Paris after the German occupation had broad sweep and consistent narrative interest. This book gets bogged down in the innumerable details of the political and military drama. If you are an historian looking for the "red letter" sources, you will be delighted by such responsible detail. If you are looking for a less detail-burdened synthesis, you will find it only in parts. With all admiration for Breevor's expertise, I finally was forced to start skimming to keep my interest going.
