Magical!
Forget Mrs. Polifax, this is really special. It's not that I hate the series, but Gilman's non-Polifax novels are her best work. This one is about a group of unlikely people stuck in the middle of a civil war in Burma in the early '50's. The situation and the interactions are really beautiful.
