Needlecrafter's Bible
(I have a 1970's edition of this book, so I don't know if it's changed,) I only read Reader's Digest when I'm waiting at the doctor's office, so I was surprised to discover that they make great how-to books! This one is perfect for dilletantes like me who want to learn how to do everything at least once. Thorough instructions, with a gazillion color photographs to illustrate, this book will tell you everything you need to know to plan and complete projects in: knitting (all kinds!), crochet, quilting, applique, embroidery, lacework (bobbin, filet, needle, tatting), and macrame. Includes troubleshooting sections, and catalogue of various stitches. Also contains info for hooked, knotted and braided rugs! Amazing!
