SYNOPSIS: The Scales of Justice takes the reader into the courtroom and to the scene of the crime in some of Canada's most famous criminal cases. Based on the highly-acclaimed CBC Radio series, the book has behind it an impressive array of legal and writing talent. The seven cases included document six sensational murder trials as well as an important rape case. From the still hotly debated murder conviction of Wilbert Coffin, to Evelyn Dick, accused in the 1940s of murdering her husband, then dismembering his body; from the trial of Peter Demeter, probably the best-known and most intriguing of all Canadian murder cases, to the ACTRA award-winning treatment of the Wray case, "The Fruit of The Poisoned Tree", the cases in The Scales of Justice test the very limits of the Canadian justice system. The Scales of Justice will prove fascinating reading, not only to members of the legal community, but to all individuals concerned with the law of the land and how it operates in our courtrooms. For crime buffs, these cases will be all the more interesting because they are real. George Jonas is a man of multiple talents: poet, playwright, librettist, novelist, journalist, motorcyclist and CBC television and radio producer. Always intrigued by the law and by legal issues, in 1977 he co-authored a book on the Peter Demeter case which won the Mystery Writers of America International Edgar Allan Poe Award for the best crime non-fiction of 1977. Jonas is a former contributing editor of The Canadian Lawyer, and a regular columnist for Toronto Life and his work has appeared internationally in many news and arts magazines. In 1982, ACTRA recognized Jonas by awarding a "Nellie" for best radio program for one of the episodes of "The Scales of Justice." Edward L. Greenspan, Q.C., has a reputation as one of the best criminal lawyers in the country. He lives for the law and since his graduation from Osgoode Hall Law School in 1968 has been involved with it not only in practice, but in an academic context as a lecturer at the University of Toronto Law School. He also holds the Milvain Chair of Advocacy at the University of Calgary Law School. He is the editor of Martin's Annual Criminal Code, editor-in-chief of the Canadian Criminal Cases, and associate editor of Dominion Law Reports and the Criminal Law Quarterly.
