Learning in small groups has a valuable part to play in adult education - both in higher and further education and in industrial training. Tutors and trainers, however often have little understanding of the theories that underpin group learning - how groups work, when learning takes place effectively and what teaching styles are most effective and when. Revised and updated, the second edition of this book provides an introductory reader on group learning. The book begins by examining the many educational theories and models of learning and summarising the main areas where research has been carried out. The aims of group learning are outlined and the context in which any group learning takes place is considered. The tutor's role in leading a group is examined in detail and the various techniques used to teach in groups are considered - discussion, tutoring, seminars, case studies etc. Aspects of leading groups are covered, from setting the tasks and aims of the group learning experience to evaluating the quality of the learning which has taken place.
