Great personal story
This book came out in 1902 but was reissued in 1973. It was edited by James W. Silver, a somewhat controversial former professor at Ole Miss. The author was a Mississippi doctor, just married to a great-granddaughter of Rev. War hero, Gen. Nathaniel Greene. He left home to join the 1st Miss as a private. He tells the story of his Confederate service in a delightful manner. When Ft. Donelson was surrendered, he simply walked out and made his way back to Mississippi. He then joined the 42nd Miss and served for the rest of the War in the Army of No. Va. as asst. surgeon and then surgeon of his regiment. Many interesting anecdotes. Real first person stories that probably don't appear anywhere else. The endnotes are very good. I would highly recommend this book, now quite hare do find, to anyone who has an interest in the every day life of the Confederate soldier.
