Seller's Description:
"My style of photography, " Galen Rowell writes in his preface to this book, "is adventure." The pursuit of his craft "implies active visual exploration that is more mental than physical. The art becomes an adventure and vice versa." With these remarks, Rowell begins an exploration in word and image that is itself an adventure. In sixty inspirational and practical essays based on his popular column in Outdoor Photographer, and in more than one hundred and forty color photographs with extended captions. Galen Rowell reveals the inner workings of the art, business, and lifestyle of outdoor photography. Along the way, he clearly explains the sensibility that has enabled him to transform light and color into vivid, highly expressive art. The result is a unique investigation of the intuitive relationship between the artist and the natural environment. The book's four parts, each containing ten to twenty selections on fundamental aspects of the craft as Rowell practices it, are structured like an adventure story. "Goals" advises the reader on transforming visions into reality. "Preparations" discusses pushing and transcending the limits of equipment. "Journeys" is about traveling lightly-and intrepidly-to photograph such exotic locales as Alaska, Antractica, Canada, the Galapagos Islands, Guatemala, Nepal, Pakistan, Patagonia, Siberia, and Tibet. Finally, "Realizations" explores how to communicate one's worldview through photography, including the all-important question of how to get published. Rowell also deals with technical matters, such as what gear to take and what film to use, as well as ethical issues, such as digital content manipulation versus authenticity in images. His insightsrange from the artistic-"There is no single visual reality"-to the spiritual-"Much of the source of enlightenment through exotic travel is...the pretravel discipline of getting one's life in order." He relates numerous fascinating anecdotes from his brilliant career: ge.

Seller's Description:
Very Good. Size: 7x0x10; Signed by Rowell (signature only) on half title page; scarce thus. In sixty practical yet inspirational essays drawn from his Outdoor Photographer column, and in 145 stunning color photographs, world-renowned photographer Galen Rowell explains and demonstrates the techniques he uses to transform light and color into vivid, uniquely expressive art. The illuminating essays in Galen Rowell's Vision are grouped into four chapters covering the fundamental aspects of the art of adventure photography as practiced by one of its masters: "Goals, " transforming dreams into realities through personal vision; "Preparations, " pushing the limits of equipment, film, and technique; "Journeys, " merging visions with realities; and "Realizations, " communicating one's worldview through photography. Throughout, Rowell includes examples of some of his most memorable images and relates fascinating anecdotes from his extraordinary photographic career. Galen Avery Rowell (August 1940-2002) was a wilderness photographer, adventure photojournalist and mountaineer. He pioneered a new kind of photography in which he was not merely an observer, but considered himself a participant in the scenes that he photographed-he considered the landscape part of the adventure, and the adventure part of the landscape. Rowell won the Ansel Adams Award for Conservation Photography in 1984. He had numerous photographic assignments for Life, National Geographic, Outdoor Photographer, and various other publications. Rowell was also a highly regarded writer on subjects ranging from photography, humanitarian and environmental issues, human visual cognition, and mountaineering, publishing numerous magazine articles and eighteen books in his lifetime.
Together with Mountain Light a great book by a great photographer who is much missed. Deals at length with his work in Tibet and his efforts to publicise the situation there. A good read and not just for photographers.
