"Howard Phillips Lovecraft is beginning to emerge as one of that tumultuous period's most critically fascinating and yet enigmatic figures", writes Alan Moore. But at the time of his death, Lovecraft was maligned by critics and ignored by the public. Leslie S. Klinger reanimates Lovecraft and charts the rise of the pulp writer. Lovecraft's vast body of work-a mythos in which humanity is a blissfully unaware speck in a cosmos shared by ancient alien beings-is increasingly being recognised as the foundation for American horror and science fiction. With nearly 300 illustrations and more than 1,000 annotations, Klinger illuminates every hidden dimension of 22 of Lovecraft's most canonical works.

Again, this masterwork is absolutely indispensable for everyone who considers themselves to be a true Lovecraft fan. The format of marginal notes is wonderful; the amount of detail is delightful!

Content and Character
I've been an H.P. Lovecraft fan for decades; since I was a young teen. I bought this particular book because of its quality and for the annotated comments. Editor Klinger writes numerous historical, biographical, etymological, and trivial comments and footnotes throughout the narrative of each Lovecraft story in this edition. It really adds to the understanding of the author's mindset and times when the stories were written. Even though I've read all these stories many times before, I'm enjoying them again with the explanatory annotations provided by Klinger.
Also, the book itself is a work of art. It's a beautifully bound and illustrated edition. However, due to its massive size and weight, I strongly recommend buying both the book (to have in your library) and the ePub version to read on your light and easy to handle eReader (Nook, Kindle, etc.).
If you're a fan of Lovecraft, this is a "must have" edition for you.
