I loved this book. I saw it on television and waited to buy the book at a reasonable price that I could afford. This lady detective is a warm and cheery sole. I got quite involved in it and couldn't put it down until the very end. I would recommend it to any body who likes something different in the detective and crime world.

Fall in love with the spirit of place & heroine
The author conveys so authentically and with gentle humour the nuances of a country a world away from what the majority of us know.
Here people address each other respectfully as "Mother" (MMa) and "Brother" (Rra).
This is not a heroine who is blind to the faults of the world, she sees clearly but with a loving heart.
The TV series does a great job of preserving the flavour of this wonderful book and the other titles in the series.

perfect light read
The first book in a growing series tells of the life and work of Precious Ramotswe, the first lady detective in Botswana. While portraying Mma Ramotswe's day to day activities, the writer also shares a warm glimpse into the culture and history of Botswana and its people. Our heroine has her own sense of wisdom and justice, reflective of the philosophy of life instilled by her Daddy, which she applies to her clients' problems with a generousity of heart.
While this series is not thrilling or exciting, you will read this with a smile on your face wanting to finish before you put it down.
Enjoy.

A gentle delight.....
The delightful first book in this series of 6, telling of the life of Precious Ramotswe, the first lady detective in Botswana. Here we don't have murder, or car chases - Mma Ramotswe settles her traditionally-built figure into her tiny white van, and explores the mysteries of missing cattle, misbehaving husbands and wayward sons and daughters. This is a lovely, warm glimpse into the life of the people living in Gabarone, Botswana. We get in tune with their philosophies of life and the relaxed pace of living. I was recommended to read this by a friend, and have since happily settled down with the rest of the series. It isn't exciting, it isn't salacious, it isn't gripping, it won't have you falling off your seat laughing. Instead you'll sit there with a contented smile on your face and a real reluctance to put down this book!
