New. 0856676039. *** FREE UPGRADE to Courier/Priority Shipping Upon Request ***-*** IN STOCK AND IMMEDIATELY AVAILABLE FOR SHIPMENT-Flawless copy, brand new, pristine, never opened--208 pages; 120 color and 400 monochrome illustrations. Publisher description: Edward Wadsworth was a major figure in British art of the first half of the twentieth century. In 1913–14 he helped found the London Group as a forum for exhibiting stylistically challenging art; in 1914, alongside Wyndam Lewis, he was a leading member of the Vorticists; in the 1920s he was influential in the Rappel a l'Ordre and Neue Sachlichkeit movements, and in the 1930s he was a founder member of two radical pro-abstraction movements, Unit One and the Paris-based Abstraction-Creation. Wadsworth's work radiates his lifelong commitment to 'form, feeling and calculation'. Working during a period of rapid technical advancement, he perceived machinery and man to be balanced by a romanticism and lyricism, a sadness and melancholy, culminating in a triumphant mix of the man-made and the natural. Indeed, as Wyndham Lewis predicted, 'the passage of time [would make] his best work more, not less, respected'. This highly illustrated volume assesses one of Britain's most talented and experimental painters and printmakers of the period and places his work within a British and European context. A complete, illustrated catalogue of the paintings and drawings is included. Jonathan Black is senior research fellow in history of art at Dorich House Museum, Kingston University. In 2004 he curated the exhibition Blasting the Future: Vorticism in Britain 1910-1920 held at the Estorick Collection of Modern Italian Art, London and the Whitworth Art Gallery, the University of Manchester. He is the author of The Sculpture of Eric Kennington (Lund Humphries, 2002) and has published variously on Henri Gaudier-Brzeska, C. R. W. Nevinson, Charles Sargeant Jagger and British sculpture between the wars. --with a bonus offer--
