Excellent book, First in a series of three books ( The Australian trilogy) by Bryce Courtenay. The storyline keeps you going with characters you learn to care about. It will take a few extra days to read due to its length. Courtenay was a great writer, his most famous book, The Power of One, is a fantastic read also.

No potatoes involved
Courtenay wroe one good book, Power of One. All the rest seem based on sodomy and rape and put the reader off almost immediately.
