In recent years philosophers and psychologists have increasingly become interested in "the self". Among philosophers this has emerged in a variety of contexts. Authors such as William Alston have been directly concerned with the notion of the self and how it functions within psychological theory. Other philosophers have focused on the question, "What is a person?" and have at times found a personhood closely associated with having a concept of oneself, a self-identity, or certain attitudes towards oneself. For instance, Harry Frankfurt has argued that to be a person it is necessary that one has what he terms "second order volitions" (ie desires with respect to the kinds of desires one acts upon). Despite the centrality of the notion of wholeness to a variety of literatures, there have been relatively few attempts to articulate exactly what it is to be whole. The assumption seems to be that we already know the answer to this question, and thus terms such as "integrity" or "integration" or "coherence" are widely used without further efforts to articulate the idea. One of the objectives of this book is to give a better account of what it is to be whole or to have an integrated personality.
