This is another in the tigress series by this author. The brutal times in Shanghai and the distain for "barbarian ghost people" (as whites are called in the book by the natives) is still rampant. The stories are fraught with brutality in all corners I find. I suppose that is to be expected in times of rebellion. Another "barbarian" white woman on a quest to know that the tigress scrolls contain, mean and can lead to. A servant who is a student of the teachings on his own path to enlightenment. It was meant for them to work together. He is near forced by her. She is not as innocent (but she is pure) as some women in the series as she has friends and they have experimented with their own bodies a time or two. The fire of Yang seeks the calm of Yin and they are drawn together to work toward the ideal of immortality on earth taught in the scrolls. While she is fighting a mother who is domineering and zealot, brother who is damaged and simple minded and a father who is an opium dealer and a cur. Finding the scrolls, she feels with Ken Jin she can make her brother whole again - not realizing it is his environment that is keeping him the way he is and not progressing. Ken Jin has his own secrets he is hiding. They work together but she wants friendship too. He makes a final attempt to right his path in a devistating way and she is a friend to see him through. It comes to a head on this travel and they finally find and speak their hearts/minds. It is a fair book - not the greatest I have read, but I did read the whole thing. I got the rest in the series, but I think I am going to be disappointed as I go since the theme seems the same throughout and the perils seem to mimic.
