I am not a fan of books written by several different people despite how talented some of the contributors are. The editor or creator of this book Robert J. Randisi has had other books published. I don't know how good they are, having never read any of his stuff. John Jakes has been around for years and is a good enough writer. The book does use a trick of introducing Bat Masterson as a newspaper reporter for the New York Morning Telegraph to add commentary between the stories written by these authors. Bat Masterson WAS a sports reporter for a New York newspaper after having lived an exciting life in the West. But overall I can't give this book a high rating even though Elmer Kelton did write on of the chapters, and it is typical Kelton prose and dialog.
