Living In The Past
This book is so well written and the author so knowledgable of the Hawai'i of 150 years ago that I would urge anyone with any interest in Hawaiian culture to find a copy, settle in, and read. You will be taken back to those times, understanding the thoughts and feelings of the native Hawaiians after contact with the western world, and the resulting problems that were sure to follow. Personally, I live in the area south from Ka'a'awa, in the path of where the central character travels in this novel. The old names are there, of every natural landmark... that, and the presence of actual historical figures makes it even more realistic. I think few can match this author, and I have already ordered another of his books, recommended by a friend - and wondering why it took me so long.
