Having just read the author's Tobacco Road, and found it to be funny and touching, with well-drawn characters, I was amazed by how the author couild follow it up with such a flimsy story (but I confess I didn't get to the end, bacause it was so bad.) He should have followed the example of Harper Lee, who wrote the magnificent "Mocking Bird" and left it at that.
