I cannot have found a better introduction to the neolithic cave paintings, carvings, and other artifacts dating back 30,000 years or more that have been discovered and documented in the past 140 years or so. This survey and history of the archeology of the caves, from early French, Swiss, Italian, German, and Spanish discoveries to the most recent cave finds in the latter part of the 20th century is comprehensive. The accompanying photographs and drawings are breathtaking and inspiring. Highly recommended! I have given several copies as gifts.

Rock Art at its best
Excellent photos and text. Although other areas of the world are mentioned, the main emphasis is on rock art of Spain and France. I would have liked some more coverage of the rock art in Southern Africa and China. A lot of text is devoted to in-fighting in the French science and arts communities about this type of art.. Unfortunately this kind of turf war is still common in many areas. Other than that, the book is outstanding.
