Their story is the story of the environmental movement, and it is movingly told by founder and former president John H. Adams, who conveys the struggles and victories of building a large political action organization. Sales Handle: From the nation's leading authority on environmental issues, A Force for Nature offers an insider perspective on the environmental movement and issues affecting our world today. - With 1.2 million members, the NRDC is the world's most respected environmental organization. - The book is written in the voice of the connected and beloved John Adams, NRDC founder and former president. - This book is part of a larger publishing program with the NRDC (launched in F09 with Simple Steps Deck and Heroes of the Environment), and will build on the authority and expertise of the NRDC brand. - Given the environmental and political climate, sustainable living and environmental awareness are not just cool, but essential. This book takes a general-interest approach to environmentalism. - NRDC will feature and promote these titles in their publications, their award-winning On Earth magazine, on their Web site, and mailings to their 1.2 million members. - These titles adhere to NRDC's strict environmental standards for printing and production, using at least 30% post-consumer waste and soy ink. A FORCE FOR NATURE DETAILS HOW THE NRDC: Launched the next wave of environmentalism ' NRDC carries on the legacies of John Muir, Teddy Roosevelt, and Rachel Carson. They brought environmentalists, corporations and governments together, proving environmental responsibility could be profitable. Made our air, water, and food safer ' NRDC helped draft the legislation that created the Superfund cleanup program, and showed the world the dangers of DDT, pesticides, asbestos, and fossil fuels. Helped to end the cold war ' NRDC and Soviet scientists worked in secret to monitor the Nuclear Test Ban treaty and celebrated together when their efforts helped bring down the Wall. Empowered individuals to fight back ' NRDC represented ordinary citizens against Dow Chemicals, Exxon, Mitsubishi, the EPA, Congress, the Supreme Court, and every president since Ford-and won. Shaped the map of the United States ' NRDC has preserved the Alaska National Wildlife Refuge, the entire coastline of the American West, and much more. Evidence of NRDC's work is visible from space. Laying the groundwork for the future ' NRDC is working directly with Beijing to reduce China's carbon footprint and is monitoring the Obama administration to ensure the U.S. complies with the Copenhagen Accord.
