Seller's Description:
Very Good+ 0810841193. This is the first US publication of this work (which was originally published in the UK in 1999). This is a COMPLETE TWO VOLUME SET: Volume 1 covers 1927-1950, 367 p.; Volume 2 covers 1950-1974, 452 p. The first volume "briefly sets out the first 21 years of Ellington's life" and then becomes more in-depth, going month by month and day by day with his engagements, recording recording sessions, etc. The second volume covers Ellington's life from his return from the band's European tour in 1950 through to his death in 1974. Arranged chronologically, this is almost a day-by-day account of his life, his engagements, etc. The text is accompanied by hundreds (? ) of photos and illustrations, and many are rare. Original publisher's glossy pictorial covers (no dust jackets, as issued). There is a tiny remainder dot on the bottom edge of volume 2, and the corners are lightly bumped on volume two as well; volume one has a bar code sticker on the title page and a stamp on the verso of the title page which has been overstamped to obscure it, else this is a nice clean, tight and unmarked set with no interior or exterior markings, no previous owner names and no bookplates. Nearly fine without the two slight flaws mentioned.; B&W Photos & Illustrations; 4to 11"-13" tall; 367p., 452p. pages.
