Atlantic Beaches is one of twenty-seven volumes in the Time-Life book series The American Wilderness. In this series, readers are introduced to the many wilderness areas located in North America. This volume explores the beaches of the Atlantic seaboard of the United States, from Cape Cod in Massachusetts to Cape Lookout in North Carolina. The following National Seashores are described in this book: Cape Cod, Fire Island, Assateague, and Cape Hatteras. We also learn about beach formation and erosion, salt marshes, and the plants and animals typically found on Atlantic beaches. Author Jonathan Norton Leonard (1903-1975) spent his childhood near Cape Cod and provides the reader numerous and interesting descriptions of the beaches he has seen and walked. The author also quotes form Henry David Thoreau's book Cape Cod. The last chapter describes the wild life refuges which serve as winter havens for migratory birds on the Atlantic flyway. The numerous picture essays enhance the narrative. In sum, this book proves that isolated wilderness areas can still be found despite the population density of the Atlantic seaboard. Also, this volume is a well-written introduction to a wilderness shared by land and sea.
