I think I found a new favourite author. This is the first book in her Seven Wonders of the World series.I already read Pompeii, City of Fire. They are stand alone novels, so they can be read out of order. This one was set in the ancient Greek city of Rhodes in the week leading up to the great earthquake of 226 B.C. This earthquake snapped the colossal bronze statue of Helios at its knees, and left only the feet upright on the platform. The remains lay on the ground for 800 years. It was 110 feet high, just slightly shorter than the Statue of Liberty and quite a feat of engineering commendable for its day. That's why it was one of the seven wonders of the ancient world. T.L. Higley uses this setting to tell a fast-paced story of the beautiful haetera of a powerful politician. He is killed and she must hide the fact that he is dead for a week, in order that she will not be charged with his murder, and so she can escape. There are about four or five subplots that weave through the story. It was an exciting, well told story. On to the next!
