Seller's Description:
ix, [1], 257, [1] pages. Illustrations. Introduction by Abba Eban. Ink notation on first page. Hannah Szenes (often anglicized as Hannah Senesh or Chanah Senesh; July 17, 1921-November 7, 1944) was a poet and Special Operations Executive (SOE) paratrooper. She was one of 37 Jewish parachutists of Mandate Palestine parachuted by the British Army into Yugoslavia during the Second World War to assist in the rescue of Hungarian Jews about to be deported to the German death camp at Auschwitz. Szenes was arrested at the Hungarian border, then imprisoned and tortured, but refused to reveal details of her mission. She was eventually tried and executed by firing squad. She is regarded as a national heroine in Israel, where her poetry is widely known and the headquarters of the Zionist youth movements Israel Hatzeira, a kibbutz and several streets are named after her. Hannah Senesh, poet and Israel's national heroine, has come to be seen as a symbol of Jewish heroism. Safe in Palestine during World War II, she volunteered for a mission to help rescue fellow Jews in her native Hungary. She was captured by the Nazis, endured imprisonment and torture, and was finally executed at the age of twenty-three. Like Anne Frank, she kept a diary from the time she was thirteen. This edition brings together not only the widely read and cherished diary, but many of Hannah's poems and letters, and insightful material not previously published in English. Described by a fellow parachutist as a "spiritual girl guided almost by mysticism, " Hannah's life has something of value to teach everyone. Hannah's words and actions will inspire people from each generation to follow their own inner voices, just as she followed hers.
