This book is usually downgraded simply because it is written in romanization and not Korean script. However learning the Korean script is the easiest part of learning Korean, I learned it in a week. The most difficult part of Korean is being able to speak it well and this is where you need books like this one that focus on the spoken language. I even dare to say that this is the most comprehensive and well-explained textbook I have ever used in my years of learning Korean. Few authors can match the insights that Martin gives you in this book, you'd have to buy 3-4 expensive specialty-books to get the same depth. This book is sadly far too underrated.

outdated
I've been studying Korean for 4 semesters now, and this book didn't work for me at all because it's doesn't use "hangeul", and figuring out the Romanization is another system I don't think is particularly useful.
