There are millions of colonial styled houses in the United States. Most of them are merely a jumble of 18th century details -- columns, shutters and fan lights -- stuck on mediocre house boxes. Royal Barry Wills was the greatest auteur of Cape Cod revival architecture. His understanding of proportion and correct detail lift his designs so very far above the average suburban traditional. Be warned: as you come to appreciate Wills's simple-but-subtle designs, you may find yourself agitated and annoyed by most houses that are passed off as "colonial".
