Amoretti and Nancy Bermeo bring together a group of scholars to analyse the successes and failures of federalism in advanced industrial democracies, developing countries and post-communist regimes. From these diverse examples the contributors and volume editors draw important lessons for all states that today face problems of government relating to territories and minorities. Advanced industrial democracies studied in this volume include Switzerland, Belgium, Canada, the United Kingdom, Italy, France and Spain. Cases of developing and post-Communist states include India, Russia, Turkey, Mexico, and Nigeria. Chapters on individual states are supplemented by others on particular issues related to institutional design, such as the effects of different electoral systems, secession movements and the limitations of the United States as a model.
