This study, prepared during a pivotal period in the U.S. Civil Rights movement addressed the fact that few of the formal craft apprenticeship programs were available to Negroes/African-Americans. Economic opportunity afforded by careers as plumbers, pipefitters, and sheetmetal workers were thus structurally denied to them. This study addresses and analyses the factors that influenced the low rate of Negro participation in apprentices programs and the discrimination practices by unions and employers. The book at its core is a series of urban based cases studies. The authors also address the various remedial program then in effect and provided recommendations for further improvement.
