Hoehner delivers the goods
Hoehner's exegetical commentary on Ephesians is written from a conservative evangelical position. He is painstakingly thorough. A knowledge of New Testament Greek is necessary if one is to gain the most profit from Hoehner's work. He works with background information carefully and brings the reader up to speed on certain key issues and how they have been treated historically. For instance, in the introductory section (pages 9-18), he lays out chronologically in side-by-side columns those scholars who are proponents of Pauline authorship and those who are against it. He provides 130 pages of material on introductory matters. In the back of the book, he has 50 pages of indices (author index and Scripture index). The exegetical commentary proper comprises nearly 750 pages. It is a tour-de-force through the book of Ephesians. One of the strengths of the book is the various interpretive options that he has provided for the reader. This book is a must for any pastor who is an expositional preacher and who is thinking of preaching a series of messages through Ephesians. Also, Bible college and seminary professors should certainly have this book on their shelf. Hoehner's commentary on Ephesians may be a bit hefty for the layman, but if he or she is diligent and patient and willing to skim past some of the more technical information, they will find it well worth the effort.
