Said Henry Steele Comanger in the New York Times, this work is everything we have come to expect from the practiced hand of Bruce Catton: scholarly, judicious, clear, and unfailingly interesting. It would be difficult to find a better introduction to the Civil War than this book.

Not what I wanted

I thought I was purchasing Bruce Catton's Civil war, consisting of 3 volumes in one: Mr. Lincoln's Army, Glory Road, and A Stillness at Appomattox. What I got was an overview of the war, what I can only guess is a condensed version of the Trilogy. This is NOT what I wanted. I'm very disappointed.
