The most worthwhile
Dave Ramsey is one of those celebrities who capitalized early on his appearances on talk shows. But he also has lived what he preaches and that is apparent almost from the first page of his book, The Total Money Makeover.
I've always been uneducated and unsophisticated about the ways money works for and against us during our lives. Ramsey's follow up to Financial Peace is well worth its price. If you are concerned about your financial future, no matter where you are in life, then Dave Ramsey's advice is among the best you can get. Letting go of some of one's belief's about how money flows into and mostly out of our lives is a key to embracing his precepts. I found the few religious references annoying, but Ramsey and his wife are deeply religious; some of their notions about money are intertwined with their faith. Fair enough and despite being an atheist, I was able to keep moving through the book and ignore the references. You can't beat his no nonsense and very practical advice on saving $1,000 quickly BEFORE you pay off your debts; paying off the smallest debts FIRST to create momentum for tackling the more outrageous debts like credit cards. What I found helpful were the vignettes dropped into different sections of the book of personal stories from Ramsey's clients. I thought I was a difficult case--imagine being $80,000 in debt on credit cards.
As he says in Total Money Makeover, a lot of the steps are uncomfortable and are not easy. They are simple but they are not easy. But the alternative is poverty and a less fulfilling life because one is always worried about the bills. The practical lessons Ramsey teaches in the book are worthwhile sharing with kids so they can avoid the mistakes we parents have made. The information provides wonderful learning opportunities to talk about money, even during a trip to the mall to buy the latest apparel at Aeropostale.
I would not hesitate to recommend this workbook to any of my friends who are concerned about their financial well-being.
(Incidentally, I've completed the first step and saved that $1,000).

Terrific guide to financial success
What can I say about Dave Ramsey that hasn't already been said? The man has graduated from the School of Financial Hard Knocks, and he's devoted his life to teaching everyone what he's learned so we don't have to go through the pain he did.
I read this book mainly because my husband asked me to. He wants us to work on Ramsey's Baby Steps, even though we have no debt besides our house, and we don't believe most of the financial myths discussed in the beginning of the book. But, as Ramsey says, he wants to teach you how to be financially exceptional, not just average (which is what we are.) I'm all for that!
Along with Ramsey's step-by-step guide to financial success, this book is full of personal success stories - people who have been thousands and thousands of dollars in debt, and by following Ramsey's guide, have pulled themselves out of dire straits. These are very inspiring stories, and they helped drive home the point that, given the chance, it's always better to improve your financial situation rather than just accept your average status quo.
