Before Paul Revere rode, seagoing American merchants were striking the first blows for independence. Lured by money, none struck more deftly than Isaac Biddlecomb, captain of the Judea whose smuggling activity made a mockery of the British navy. Finally caught, he sacrificed his ship rather than surrender. Now he was a wanted man. Author James Nelson brings to life a never-before-seen side of America's war for independence - the seaman's view.

Nelson is in a way the American version of R.L. Stevenson. He writes a rousing good tale, yet there is a predictable juvenile quality to his plot. All in all, an excellent boy's book, with one caveat: in order to follow the action the boy must be conversant with everything having to do with an early 19th-century sailing vessel.
