Janet is a shy sensitive girl who is adopted by an ex dancer who is bound to a wheel chair following a drunk driving accident. This is one of the few books where the adults are multi layered. They are flawed and one can easily feel sorry for them. None of the adults are truly wicked. Janet is the most interesting of the orphans in this series. She knows what she wants and does whatever she can to keep it. Her determination makes the climax all the more heart breaking.
