This is the diabetes blockbuster, now revised and updated with 25 percent new material. First published in 1999, this friendly guide has long been our top "For Dummies" health title; a book that has sold more than 180,000 copies and helped people everywhere understand and manage diabetes - a disease that has climbed to epidemic levels in recent years. Now, significantly revised and updated, this new edition will be even more useful to the 17 million Americans currently diagnosed with diabetes and the one million more who are diagnosed every year. The second edition covers important advances in blood sugar meters, the latest medications and insulin treatments, and new ways to use older medications, offering anyone with Type 1 or Type 2 diabetes all the facts they need to put together a state-of-the-art treatment program with a doctor. The book also incorporates new information on diet and exercise, including an updated discussion of the glycemic index, an evaluation of Atkins and other low-carb diets, the latest on recommended and forbidden foods, and a new 10,000-step exercise plan. Leading endocrinologist, Alan Rubin, offers specific advice to parents with obese children who are at risk of developing Type 2 diabetes, pregnant women who may develop gestational diabetes, and elderly patients who suffer from the condition and provides information on coping with long-term complications, such as heart disease, blindness, and kidney failure. In short, this perennial bestseller is better and more indispensable than ever. Alan L. Rubin, MD (San Francisco, CA), has had a private practice specializing diabetes and thyroid disease for more than 28 years and is one of the nation's foremost authorities on diabetes. A former assistant clinical professor of medicine at the University of California, San Francisco, he is also the author of "Diabetes Cookbook For Dummies" (0-7645-5230-9), "Thyroid For Dummies" (0-7645-5385-2), and "High Blood Pressure For Dummies" (0-7645-5424-7).

This book offers a great intro to the body condition called diabetes. Rubin, a doctor, explains the different types of diabetes, then points to causes that lead to and effects that generally follow diabetes if left untreated. He also takes time to suggest how diabetes can be prevented or managed with good prognosis. Overall, an excellent introduction for someone who has just been diagnoses with diabetes, someone who want to review their understanding of diabetes and how to manage it, and for those who have friends or loved ones who have diabetes, this offers understanding.

fine job; good reference plain
plain lay terms, good reference to have handy over materials from doctors and organizations; neuropathy usually gets no coverage because the authors often don't suffer from it or even have diabetes.

Diabetes for Dummies
I really enjoyed this book. It is very informative and easy to read. I particularly like the section on glucometers. Dr. Rubin included much detail about what the meters do and what they need to do. There is much information on what tests need to be done and how often. The section on diet is informative and useful. I would recommend this book to anyone newly diagnose with Diabetes.
