Seller's Description:
Morales, Yuyi. Very good in very good dust jacket. Signed by author. DJ has slight wear and soiling. 44 p. Illustrations. From Maya Soetoro-Ng, sister of President Barack Obama, comes a lyrical story relaying the loving wisdom of their late mother to a young granddaughter she never met. Little Suhaila wishes she could have known her grandma, who would wrap her arms around the whole world if she could, Mama says. And one night, Suhaila gets her wish when a golden ladder appears at her window, and Grandma Annie invites the girl to come along with her on a magical journey. Inspired by the life & spirit of her mother, the author has crafted a magical tale that sings with the love that bonds a family together through generations. A little girl asks her mother about her grandmother Ann & so begins this loving/inspiring story. From Wikipedia: "Maya Kassandra Soetoro-Ng (born August 15, 1970) is the maternal half-sister of Barack Obama, who is the 44th and current President of the United States. She was previously a high school history teacher and university instructor in Hawaii....Soetoro-Ng authored a children's book, Ladder to the Moon, that was inspired by her mother and her daughter, Suhaila; it was published in 2011. She is working on a book about peace education and conflict resolution in high schools. She was a high-school history teacher at La Pietra: Hawaii School for Girls and the Education Laboratory School, both in Honolulu, Hawaii. She also taught night classes at the University of Hawaii. She previously taught and developed curriculum at The Learning Project, an alternative public middle school in New York City, from 1996 2000. In 2009 Soetoro-Ng helped bring her mother's dissertation to publication in the form of the book Surviving against the Odds: Village Industry in Indonesia. She wrote a foreword to the book and participated in its launch at the American Anthropological Association annual meeting. Most recently, she was an Education Specialist at the East West Center and an Assistant Professor at the University of Hawai'i College of Education. Soetoro-Ng speaks during the first day of the 2008 Democratic National Convention in Denver, Colorado. ResearchSoetoro-Ng's doctoral research at the University of Hawaii at Manoa in Honolulu focused on Comparative International Education, and involved a study comparing an international school in Indonesia where she taught, and a school in New York. She particularly looked at qualitative differences, interviewing students, staff, and other people involved in the two schools. In May 2007, Soetoro-Ng announced that she would assist Obama in his campaign for President, and took two months off to campaign for him. Soetoro-Ng participated in the 2008 Democratic National Convention where she spoke briefly about growing up with her brother and brought an Asian-American presence to the stage. Soetoro-Ng also spoke briefly about the Obama administration's accomplishments at the 2012 Democratic National Convention in Charlotte, North Carolina, on September 4, 2012, sharing the podium with First Lady Michelle Obama's older brother and Oregon State University men's basketball team head coach, Craig Robinson. From an on-line posting: " Rambunctious art, gemstone hues, glowing pictures and paintings grand enough for a mural are some of the words often used to describe Yuyi Morales s artwork. Since having emigrated from Mexico in 1994 she has drawn strongly from her Mexican heritage to create some of the most celebrated books for children. Born in Xalapa, the city of flowers and springs, Yuyi grew up among giant grandmothers, mossy house walls, and rampaging feral gardens. Amidst her family s magical stories she learned to perceive the ordinary as extraordinary. She began drawing in her early years while believing herself the daughter of the most beautiful woman and the strongest man in the world. Eventually she would spend long hours replicating her family s portraits, copying images from paperback graphic novels, and learning how to draw her face in front of...
