I had checked this book out several times from t he library and finally decide I should just buy it. I have practiced calligraphy for several years and have used this guide as a reference many times. The alphabets, of which there are 26, are clearly broken down. Each stroke is shown in a different color so you can see the formation of each letter. Each hand is given a biography and shows historical examples. I consider it a wonderful reference. This is, however, not the first book to buy if you are just learning calligraphy. There is a very brief overview of the "tools of the trade", but not an in-depth explanation or a guide to choosing the right tools (papers, pens, nibs, inks, etc.) for a project. Each alphabet described in the book does give you a nib style (straight, oblique, etc.), but being unfamiliar with the tools and the terms used could be a hinderance. I would not recommend it for someone just beginning, but if you have been practicing the art of calligraphy for a little while, this book is a fabulous reference and I highly recommend it.
