Sir Timothy John Berners-Lee OM KBE (born 8 June 1955), also known as TimBL, is an English engineer and computer scientist, best known as the inventor of the World Wide Web. He is currently a professor of Computer Science at the University of Oxford and at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). He made a proposal for an information management system in March 1989, ] and he implemented the first successful communication between a Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP) client and server via the internet in mid-November the same year. Berners-Lee is the director of the World Wide Web Consortium, which oversees the continued development of the Web. He is also the founder of the World Wide Web Foundation and is the holder of the 3Com founders chair at the MIT Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory. Derived from a Kirkus review: Berners-Lee traces the Web to a "play" program he invented in 1980, while at the CERN laboratories. Berners-Lee was interested in using computers to connect ideas. One problem was allowing workers to use their preferred software without imposing a complex set of new rules governing access to the Web. Hypertext, which allowed any document to be linked to any other on the system, was the key to solving this problem. The Internet's standardized protocols seemed an ideal way to bridge between operating systems. By 1989, he was ready to create the Web. Within a year of its introduction, the number of users was doubling every three to four months. Berners-Lee convinced different groups to adopt standards that would increase the accessibility and utility of the Web. CERN released the basic Web code and protocols into the public domain. He describes his visions for the Web: as a medium for collaboration, person-to-person and person-to-computer.
